PSHCE / RSE

PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship and Economic education) at Corley Academy is a subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare for life and work in modern Britain. Evidence shows that well-delivered PSHCE programmes have an impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for students, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.

Our PSHCE Curriculum aims to develop skills and attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, team working and critical thinking in the context of learning, grouped into three core themes: health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world (including economic wellbeing and aspects of careers education).

RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) is taught within the PSHCE education curriculum. Biological aspects of RSE are taught within the science curriculum, Online Safety within the ICT curriculum and other aspects are included in religious education (RE). Please see our policy for full details.

RSE focuses on giving young people the information they need to help them develop healthy, nurturing relationships of all kinds, including:

          • Families
          • Respectful relationships, including friendships
          • Online and media
          • Being safe
          • Intimate and sexual relationships, including sexual health

Parents have the right to withdraw their children from the non-statutory components of sex education within RSE up to and until 3 terms before the child turns 16. After this point, if the child wishes to receive sex education rather than being withdrawn, the school will arrange this.

Requests for withdrawal should be put in writing using the form below and addressed to the headteacher. (Paper copies of this are available upon request)

A copy of withdrawal requests will be placed in the students' educational record. The headteacher will discuss the request with parents and take appropriate action.

Alternative work will be given to students who are withdrawn from sex education.
