Mentor Time / Lessons
Corley Academy, as a UNICEF Rights Respecting School, uses mentor time to teach students about global events and children's rights. The focus is on helping students understand and engage with important issues around the world, while also connecting those issues to British values. Additionally, it highlights how the school incorporates spiritual, moral, social, and cultural topics into the learning experience.
In short, the school is fostering an environment that encourages students to be aware of global issues, respect children's rights, and develop values and perspectives that are important for their personal and social development.
In our mentor Lesson we complete programmes. For example, this Autumn/Spring terms, students have completed work on Protective Behaviours.
Protective Behaviours was developed with the intention of helping our students to keep themselves safe. This is delivered during Autumn Term Mentor lesson times, through discussions and activities based on rights and responsibilities, identifying physical and emotional feelings, fun to feel scared, risking on purpose, early warning signs, how our thinking can influence both feelings and behaviour, body boundaries, protective interruptions and using a trusted network of people. The course develops as the students move through the school.
In the Summer Term we will be delivering a Personal Hygiene programme, devised by our staff for all our students to follow during the Summer Term Mentor lessons. This will support our students to become more independent with their self-care as they enter puberty and approach adulthood. We will focus on the importance of keeping our bodies clean, brushing our teeth and washing our clothes.
During Friday’s mentor time, students work with their mentors to review the Key to Success targets they set the previous week and reflect on their progress. Together, they evaluate which targets were met and set new ones for the following week, focusing on the specific Key to Success being emphasised—whether it’s Being Independent, Creative, Reflective, Part of a Team, an Investigator, or Being Involved. This time is also used to celebrate successes by recognising how many Compass Rewards students have earned and discussing their attendance, whether it’s improving or needs attention. The goal is to encourage personal growth, reflection, and active involvement in their learning journey.
